Ramgopal Varma should take voluntary retirement from film making or at least direction. That was my first reaction after watchin Rann. Varma seems to forget the art of direction- Aag indicated it and Rann proved it. Promos were shouting for more than 2 months and interviews were being broadcasted claiming that Rann would show the reality in electronic media and would present the evil effect of TRP race amongst news channels. But thanks to the weak story, poor script and easy to predict screenplay, Varma has failed in this attempt. Anyone, who has an understanding of the modus operandi of the news channel, would disapprove most of the things which Varma has presented in the movie. Nowhere in the industry the channel is run only by principles (as the main protagonist Harshvardhan does) and neither the editorial meeting consists of only one junior person of the editorial team(as shown in the meeting of India 24/7).
From the very first scene of the film, RGV turns into the mode of giving GYAN to all the existing news channels about functioning but till the end could not establish the real functioning in the channels. The story of two rival channels take the shape of a nexus between politics, business and media but lacks the conviction throughout the film. So far the political rivarly shown in the film is concerned, I can bet that nobody would have dared to show this so poorly in Indian film industry. The portrayal of various characters in the film are far from real, whether it be of Amitabh, Sudeep or Riteish. Thrice of these were presented at extreme in their approach, understanding and functioning in their respective characters.
Mr. Bachchan gave only Gyan about ethics of journalism to the viewers adn Riteish ran bikes more than doing the rporting(or whatever he was doing) in the film. The ridiculous thing is that Sudeep did not sense the disloyalty of his COO Shuchitra, though she tries the same trick time and again. And the guy was shown more hysterical than rational in his approach. Not a single act of politics shown in the film deserve mention here. Paresh, K K Raina and Ikhlaq were wasted in the film. Gul Panag was only to add comment either on Riteish or Amitabh and Neetu Chandra beautiful shown the latest lingerie collection in the market(Pun intended). Shuchitra was best among the three but even she had nothing substantial which can add feather in her cap.
Music is average, not a single song is worth humming and after watching the film you may wonder is this a film made by the same person who have given us films like Rangeela, Satya, Company and Sarkaar. I would like to finish with a phrase used by one of my friends who after watching the film said- Run from Rann. RGV, are you listening?
